BARBARA LEE
For more than 20 years, Barbara Lee has worked to increase women’s representation through her political office. She has helped elect the first woman Vice President of the United States, as well as 193 women in 33 states, including every current sitting woman Democratic Senator and Governor.
Statement from Barbara Lee,
President and Founder of the Barbara Lee Political Office
“I’m proud to announce my support for Michelle Wu in her historic bid to become the first woman elected as Mayor of Boston! I’ve known Michelle for more than a decade, and I’ve always been impressed by her passion for learning and making a difference in the community.
Not only is Michelle highly qualified, she is whip-smart, with a strong work ethic, and a bold, progressive, big-picture vision. At this moment in time when Boston and the country face multiple crises, we need an organized, compassionate leader like Michelle who always has a plan.
When I started my work more than 20 years ago, seeing multiple women run against each other would have been my dream come true, if only I could have imagined it. I chose not to get officially involved in the preliminary because I was so moved to see four highly qualified women of color who I’ve long supported leading the race. But as we approach the general, I feel compelled to endorse Michelle Wu. I am pleased that it is now the norm for women to run for office and to run against each other, and in these cases other women shouldn’t be afraid to support one woman candidate over another. Men do that all the time! So if you haven’t already gotten involved, and are hesitating, now is the time to step up!”
