Political Office Will Sunset in December 2024
CAMBRIDGE, MA, November 4, 2023—Today, philanthropic activist Barbara Lee announced that her political office, The Barbara Lee Political Office, will sunset at the end of 2024. Over 25 years, Lee has helped elect more than 200 women in 37 states through recruitment, mentoring, strategic advice, and direct support.
“They say if you shoot for the moon, you’ll land in the stars. When I started the Barbara Lee Political Office 25 years ago, I was singularly focused on a lunar landing—that is, to elect a woman as President of the United States,” Lee said. “Quickly, though, I learned: There is one moon, but there are many stars. From state legislatures to the U.S. Senate, governor’s mansions to the White House, I am very proud of how we’ve been able to help so many women in politics shine.”
When Lee began her work to elect more women to public office in 1998, there were only three women governors, nine women in the U.S. Senate, and 54 women in the House of Representatives. Today, 12 women serve as governor, 25 serve in the Senate, another 125 serve in the House, and Kamala Harris serves as Vice President of the United States.
“My grandmother was born before women could vote. She used to tell me how she watched the suffragists as they marched for freedom. And when they won that fight, my grandmother cast her vote in every election from 1920 until she passed at age 96,” Lee said. “100 years later, my first granddaughter was born on Election Day. And when Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President, she waved at the television screen. Progress is possible.”
In addition to providing direct support to women candidates, the Office has fostered the growing ecosystem of women’s campaign and leadership training programs. By providing strategic and financial resources to organizations that train women to run for office, mobilize voters, and engage women in the political process, the Office has strengthened the pipeline for democratic women candidates.
